Cannabis in Mexico
As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, Mexico was on track to legalize marijuana for recreational use. In March 2021, the Mexican Chamber of Deputies approved a bill to legalize and regulate cannabis, allowing individuals aged 18 and older to possess and use marijuana. The proposed legislation aimed to create a regulated cannabis market, with provisions for licensing and oversight of cultivation, distribution, and sales.
Upon approval by the Chamber of Deputies, the bill moved to the Mexican Senate, where it underwent further review and potential amendments. The legislation sought to establish a framework for the legal production, sale, and use of cannabis, with a focus on regulating and taxing the industry.
If the bill became law, Mexico would join a small group of countries, including Uruguay and Canada, to have legalized recreational marijuana at the national level. This move was seen as a significant shift in Mexico’s drug policy, potentially impacting the country’s approach to addressing drug-related issues and generating economic opportunities in the cannabis industry.
Given the dynamic nature of legislative processes, it is important to consult current sources for the latest information on the status of marijuana legalization in Mexico.
